چکیده

BACKGROUND Thymectomy can effectively cure most thymoma patients; however, patients with advanced thymoma typically require chemotherapy, which is associated with limited efficacy in this context. Here we provide the first report of a patient with recurrent thymoma who achieved complete remission (CR) using cyclosporine therapy. CASE PRESENTATION A 63-year-old woman who had undergone resection surgery for recurrent type B1 thymoma developed pure red cell aplasia (PRCA), and CT findings revealed thymoma recurrence. After the initiation of orally-administered cyclosporine, PRCA quickly resolved, and the thymoma disappeared without the administration of any anti-thymoma therapy. The patient has remained in CR for over 3 years using only cyclosporine. CONCLUSIONS This is the first report describing the curative potential of cyclosporine for the treatment of advanced thymoma. Although the mechanism underlying this effect remains unclear, cyclosporine can become a less toxic and more cost-effective treatment option for thymoma compared with conventional therapy. Clinical trials are needed to confirm the therapeutic potential of cyclosporine as a new treatment option for thymoma.

Role of chemotherapy in malignant thymoma.

Thymomas and thymic carcinomas, which are rare epithelial tumors arising from the thymus gland, are the most common tumors of the anterior mediastinum. Surgery is the principal treatment and is curative in early stage disease. Radiation therapy, either alone or in combination with chemotherapy, may be an option both in not completely and completely resected disease. Chemotherapy is offered to p...

Assessment of Cyclosporine Serum Concentrations on the Incidence of Acute Graft versus Host Disease Post Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation

Allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) is a curative treatment option for hematological disorders. Cyclosporine (CsA) is one of the major immunosuppressive agents for the prophylaxis against graft versus host disease (GvHD). In this retrospective study, we evaluated the effects of CsA serum levels on the incidence of acute GvHD and transplant outcomes. 103 adult patients rece...

Background: Curative treatment of malignant thymoma is resection; however, this may be precluded by invasion of vital organs. Patients and methods: Two patients with extensive intrathoracic spread of thymoma (Stages III and IV A) are presented. Treatment involved a combination of resection, radiotherapy and chemotherapy. Results: One patient survived 9 years, 4 months, but eventually died of me...

Successful treatment with cyclosporine of thymoma-related aplastic anemia.

Aplastic anemia is a rare immune-mediated complication of thymoma. Thymomas, especially of the cortical type, have the capacity to generate mature T-cells from their immature precursors. Furthermore, mature intratumorous T-cells have an increased autoantigen-specific potential. We present the case of a 75-year-old patient with an inoperable cortical thymoma who developed aplastic anemia 7 years...

Is thymomectomy sufficient for non‐myasthenic early stage thymoma patients? A retrospective, single center experience

BACKGROUND Thymic complete resection is considered the standard treatment for all thymic tumors; however, the ideal resection for non-myasthenic early stage thymic tumors has not yet been determined. We conducted a retrospective study to examine this unique scenario. METHODS We retrospectively analyzed the data of 118 early stage thymoma patients who underwent thymectomy (TM) or thymomectomy ...
